Obituary

Warren D. Slocum, 81, of Ashland City died Sunday, September 27, 2020. The son of Minnie and Bernard Slocum, he was born in Susquehanna County, PA. He was preceded in death by younger brother Stuart. Surviving family members include: his wife of 52 years, Ann, two daughters, Maria Slocum and Andrea Orton, grandchildren, Cash and Haven Orton, sister Alice Whitney, nieces Lorraine Welch, Lesley Stonier, and Jill Radicchi, nephews Loren Whitney, Jason Slocum and sister-in-law Carolee Slocum along with numerous great nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Blue Ridge High School, New Milford, PA in 1958. His education continued at East Stroudsburg State College in PA where he received a degree in social studies. He also holds a MS in Geography from Penn State University and a PhD in Geography with a minor in resource development from Michigan State University. His early life on the farm influenced his academic studies that focused on farm depopulation and agricultural systems.

His professional career included teaching two years at Montrose High School, Montrose, PA, a year at Concord College, Athens, W.Va, and several years at Lansing Community College, Lansing, MI. He also worked 27 years for the State of Michigan in the Department of Natural Resources and later the Department of Environmental Quality. His work in the water resource area included environmental assessments and project management of municipal wastewater and drinking water treatment plants.

He was active in local community and governmental affairs serving on two community association boards and on the Meridian Township planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.

His special interests included genealogical research, American history, the Civil War, agriculture and the environment. He loved to collect books and read and enjoyed gardening. He will be remembered as a friendly, kind, and compassionate individual who was concerned about the welfare of people, animals and the environment.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at 1pm in the Chapel of Cheatham County Funeral Home with Dr. Tom Binford and Reverend Bobbie Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Ashland City, TN. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 29th, from 5pm to 7pm and on Wednesday, September 30th, from 11am until service hour of 1pm.
