Obituary

Mary (Harvey) Bateman Melton, age 89, of Avon Lake, OH (formerly of Ashland City, TN) passed away September 29, 2017 at Independence Village/Story Point of Avon Lake where she happily lived near family for the past five years. She was lovingly cared for by staff at Independence Village/Story Point as well as Crossroads Hospice. Mary greatly enjoyed playing the piano by ear all her life. She entertained at numerous events over the years and was especially known as "Mary, the Piano Lady" at Independence Village where she played for sing-alongs almost every evening after dinner. Mary was a member of the Ashland City United Methodist Church since 1958 where she sang in the choir for more than fifty years. She was born February 8, 1928, and grew up in the Bellsburg community of Dickson County, TN, graduating from Charlotte (TN) High School, Class of 1946, where she was named Most Popular. She was instrumental in planning their class reunions for many years. Her first job was a switchboard telephone operator for Cain-Sloan Co. in Nashville, TN. Mary was owner and operator of the Ashland City Florist in the 1960's and 1970's where she directed hundreds of weddings and prepared thousands of funeral florals. Mary loved to travel the world with her second husband and also enjoyed introducing her only granddaughter to the joys of cruising. She was an excellent cook and friends were always honored to receive one of her delicious chocolate or pecan pies. Mary is preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Bateman, her second husband, Leonard Melton, her parents Albert and Nora Hunter Harvey, brothers and sisters Dudley Harvey, Mildred Harvey Scott, Elsie Harvey Brandon, Wilson Harvey, Allen Harvey, Christine Harvey, and Ward Harvey; nephew and nieces Kenneth (Verlie) Harvey, Nina Harvey, and Elaine Harvey (Ed) Moore. She is survived by her daughter, Joy (Michael) Herbert of Avon, OH (formerly of Mays Landing, NJ), granddaughter Karen (Kirk) Rowe of Los Gatos, CA (formerly of Avon, OH), step-son Johnny (Paula) Melton of Ashland City, TN, nieces and nephews Paul (Sarah) Harvey, Ron (Ann) Harvey, Al Harvey, Amy Harvey Tull, and Andy (Deborah) Harvey. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 9 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM and on Tuesday, October 10 from 11:00 AM until 12 Noon at the Cheatham County Funeral Home, 117 Elizabeth Street, Ashland City, TN where services will be held at 12 Noon. Interment will follow at EverRest of Cheatham, LLC, 545 Highway 49 E, Pleasant View, TN 37146.
