Obituary

Luther Cook, 88, died early Tuesday.
Born: Macon County, TN Sunday, April 13, 1924
Died: Cumberland Furnace, July 31, 2012

He was born to the late Benjamin Embrey Cook and Liza Ann White in Macon County, TN in an area called West Fork between Westmoreland and Lafayette, Tennessee. He had four older siblings, Mable, Martha, Embrey, Woodrow, and one younger brother, Gerald.

Luther grew up under poor circumstances in an area then known as Clampett Hollow of Macon County during the Great Depression. Despite tough times, he would always speak of his childhood fondly.

Luther served 21 years in service to his country while earning many awards for outstanding service. He served at more than seven military bases both in the U.S. and overseas during his career. His top rank was Technical Sergeant (E6) with the specialty of Food Service Preparation. He retired at Sewart Air Force Base in Smyrna, TN in December 1967.

It was while serving in the Air Force that Luther met and married Margaret Pearl Smith of Nashville, TN in 1952. They had five children. After military retirement he taught students as a food service instructor for the Metropolitan Vocational School in Nashville, he became Food Service Manager at Belmont College, and Assistant Manager of La Petite Restaurant at 100 Oaks Mall.

The best thing his friends said about Luther involved his ability to accomplish an assigned task with pride, energy and skill. Luke was proud of his service to his country, his state and his continued loyalty to this family. He loved country music and living in the country.

Luther is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, children, Jackie (Kate) Cook of Nashville, Danny Cook of Cumberland Furnace, Pamela (Jimmy) Bentley of Cumberland Furnace, Linda (Scott) Wall of Charlotte and Donna (David) May of Clarksville, by grandchildren, Shaun Weatherspoon, Calvin Farley and Caleb Farley, great grandchild, Sierra Weatherspoon, 5 step grandchildren, Stephanie Empey, Amy Bentley, Rebecca Bentley, Marlena May and D. J. May, 4 step great grandchildren, Dianna, Alex and Bella Empey and Ryder Bentley.
