MARTIN, John Robert (December 4, 1928 – June 24, 2012). In the early hours of Sunday morning, June 24, 2012, heaven's gate was opened wide to welcome home one of its own, John Robert Martin. Born in Dickson County, TN on December 4, 1928, he was the only son of the late Robert Neal Martin and the late Thelma Cunniff Martin Melton and step-son to the late Willard Hayes Melton. Mr. Martin was born to be a peddler; first for survival then, later because it came natural and he enjoyed it. He successfully lived each day with truth and honesty and when he was done, bravely faced his own mortality. The timeless lessons he passed along and the colorful stories he told are a testament to his well-lived life. His family and friends, old and new, who knew and loved him, will genuinely miss his bigger-than-life presence. 2nd Corinthians 5:8 says, "For we walk by faith, not by sight; we are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." With his beloved wife once again, the late Bonnie Jean Martin, Mr. Martin is survived by one son, Dan T. (Jane) Martin; three daughters, Marsha (Jeff) McLaughlin, Teresa (Dan) Binkley, and Cindy (John) Baum; seven grandchildren, Gretchen (Paul) Jacoway, Shelly (James) Gupton, Danielle (Thomas) Rutherford, Dana (Ben) Moseley, Jeb Baum, Scarlet Martin, and Zack Baum; ten great-grandchildren, Gracie Anna and Sarah Kate Jacoway, Mary Ashton, Daniel Eben, Teresa Michelle and Lillie Mae Gupton, Adron Robert and Olivia Anne Rutherford, and Carsen Jean and Ian Thomas Moseley; and one brother, Tommy Hayes Melton. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at 2pm in the Cheatham County Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Terry Forrest officiating. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, June 26, 2012, from 9am until funeral hour of 2pm. Burial will follow in the Ever Rest Memorial Gardens in Pleasant View, TN.
