Obituary

James L. Glasgow (Ashland City, TN) – James "Big Jim" Glasgow passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday August 7, 2018. Born on August 1, 1927, he and his family just celebrated his 91st birthday this past Wednesday. A member of the Ashland City Church of Christ and a retiree of Ford Glass plant, Jim is preceded in death by: his parents, Enoch Marvin and Mary Bridget Glasgow; sisters Cladie Gibbs and Hazel Elizabeth Glasgow; brothers William Glasgow, Curtis Glasgow, Robert Hershel Glasgow and Martin Gene Glasgow. Surviving family members are: his loving wife of 69 years, Juanita Shivers Glasgow; son Merle (Cathie) Glasgow; daughters Sherry (Jerry) Drake and Regina (Wayne) Simpkins. Nine surviving grandchildren are: Jeri Lynn (Gary) Savage, Traci (Matt) Williams, Angie (Jason) Hughes, Kerri Drake, Bryan (Ashley) Simpkins, Andrea(Stephen) Lavender, Melinda Simpkins, Caitlin Glasgow and Mallory Glasgow. Jim is also blessed with nine great grandchildren.
A native of Ashland City, Jim graduated from Cheatham County Central High School in 1945. He joined the United States Army in 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1948. Upon his return to Ashland City after serving his country, Jim began his courtship with Juanita which led to their marriage the day following her high school graduation on May 20, 1949. He went to work for the Ford Glass plant in 1957 where after 33 years he retired in 1990. Combining his love for the outdoors and desire to travel, Jim's family enjoyed annual extended camping trips across the U.S. After his retirement in 1990, Jim and Juanita continued to travel, broadening their range to international destinations. As members of the Cheatham County Squares, they also enjoyed square dancing from 1990 to 1996.
Visitation will be on Thursday August 9, 2018 at the Cheatham County Funeral Home in Ashland City from 1pm until 7pm. On Friday August 10, 2018, visitation will be at the Ashland City Church of Christ from noon until the service begins at 2pm with Brother Drake Jenkins presiding. Burial will follow in EverRest of Cheatham, LLC, in Pleasant View, Tennessee. Pallbearers will include: grandson (Bryan Simpkins), grandsons-in-law (Gary Savage, Matt Williams, Jason Hughes and Stephen Lavender); great-grandson (Drake Hughes); nephew (Mike Glasgow); and nephew-in-law (Charles Smith). Honorary pallbearers include: Brother Cliett Goodpasture; Brother Mike Fox; Dr. John Bright Cage; Dr. Scott Brown; Jesse Shivers; Royce Shivers; Grady Hardin; Mac McGuire; life-long friend Alfred Morris; and the Ashland City Church of Christ family and friends.
