Genell Walker, the 5th of 9 siblings was born to the late Floyd & Nancy Strain in Springfield, TN on September 19, 1934. She accepted the Lord as her personal savior and was baptized at an early age. Genell, a graduate of Tennessee State University, received her Bachelor of Science in Education Degree and after marrying Parker Walker and starting a family, relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1972. It was there that she began the first of 30 years of teaching in the Columbus City Schools District as an elementary teacher. She retired in 2004 but continued to be an intricate part of the school system when she became a substitute teacher for the district. She was a faithful member of Gennessee Ave. Church of Christ until her health began to decline. While there she worked diligently in the Food Pantry, taught Sunday School as well as Vacation Bible School. Genell leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 51 years, Parker; two children Tomika and Tommy (Monique) Walker of Columbus, OH; 3 grand daughters Brianna, Hailee & Rubee Walker; four sisters Jessie Mai Bell, Ashland, TN; Mattie Jones, Chicago, IL; Annie Jean McGill, Gary, IN; Mildred (David) Lewis, Ashland City, TN; two brothers, Robert (Doris) Strain, San Antonio, TX; William (Rebecca) Strain, Ashland, City TN; two dear friends & confidantes Delphine Rucker and Juanita Mitchum along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be Saturday, September 19, 2015, at 1pm in the Chapel of Cheatham County Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 12noon until 1pm.
