Elizabeth "Liz" Jean Newland, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, September 12, 2025, at The Residence at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee. Liz was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 8, 1934, to the late John Nelson and Edith (Bond) Nelson. She met and married Tex Newland and they made their home in Ashland City, Tennessee. Liz was known for her direct approach and active personality. She consistently maintained a strong work ethic and stayed committed to her role as a glasser at Steele Saddle Tree until the onset of her illness. Her blue eyes and smile were notable characteristics remembered by her family and friends. She fulfilled the roles of wife and mother with dedication. She also was a true animal lover as noted by her pets who survive her.
She is survived by her son, Preston (Shelli) Newland; grandchildren, Travis Newland and Trent Newland; and great-grandchildren, Kailey and Cheyenne; niece, Chontelle Nelson Fielder and nephew, Myles Nelson; and not to forget her favorite pet Buford along with her chicken, Dolly, and three cats, Penny, Kitty Girl and UT. Preceding her in death are her parents, John and Edith (Bond) Nelson; husband, Tex Newland; daughter, Laura Newland; siblings, Tillie Jones, David Nelson, Larry Nelson, John Nelson, Edith Ann Bloomquist, and Courtney Nelson.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 16th at 1pm in the Chapel of Cheatham County Funeral Home with Penny Stratton officiating. Burial will follow in Newland Cemetery in Ashland City, Tennessee. Visitation will be Monday, September 15th from 4pm to 7pm and on Tuesday from 10am until service hour of 1pm. Serving as active pallbearers will be Travis Newland, Randy Smith, Trent Newland, Austin Fielder, Myles Nelson, and Mark Austin. Honorary pallbearers are the Employees of Steele Saddle Tree, Jimmy Hunt, Shirley Jones, Patsy Sloan, Bonnie Sue Perry, and Jane Steele.
